My baby, I miss you so much. I wake up everyday with a longing in my heart to see you, talk to you, hug you. It breaks my heart that you are not here to see how much your boys have grown. They are good kids Ashlee. You would be so proud. I talk to them about you all the time. I will never let them forget the special memories of you. I love you my darling. Momma can't wait to hold you again.❤️
Sister
This post was made the day we laid Ashlee to rest. Today we laid my big sister, Ashlee, to rest. While it was an extremely difficult day her beautiful service made me feel at peace. So many people showed up today to honor and celebrate her life and I am incredibly thankful for that. Pastor Brandon Burns at Turning Point Church did an AMAZING job leading her service. He took everything we said about her and made her service run so smoothly. I felt he went above and beyond what we asked of him. I knew from the get go I wanted to speak at my sisters funeral. I know quite a few people that couldn’t attend because of different reasons. I wanted to share my speech with you all here because I had a lot to say and I want you all to be able to hear it. “This is going to be extremely difficult for me to get through...but I thought it was important for me to stand up here today for my sister. I wanted to thank you all for gathering here today to celebrate Ashlee’s life. For those of you that don’t know me, I am Samantha. One of Ashlee’s sisters and the middle child of Karyn and Russell Lewis. My parents had three girls so including my mom, my dad was outnumbered 4 to 1. If you really knew my family though, you’d know that my parents didn’t get three dainty princesses. They really got three rowdy Tom boys. We were athletic, tough, loud and competitive. This year on July 4th Jacob, the girls and I got a chance to celebrate with our Southeast Texas family. Mom planned a big slip n’ slide kick ball game and split everyone up into two teams. I tried explaining to Jacob how competitive my family was and he finally got to see it with his own two eyes. There was a whole lot of trash talk, one person threw their shoulder out, some ran for the first time in years and everyone was sore just hours after competing. It’s been 14 or so years since I watched Ashlee play a sport and let me tell y’all...she didn’t skip a beat. She was diving to catch balls and having the time of her life. We all were. I remember her being so happy later recalling the game and how blessed she was to be able to be doing things like that again with us. If you knew her you knew that being with her family was one of the biggest things she desired in life. It’s very important that you all listen very closely to what I am about to say: I want y’all to know that my team won the kickball game. Since Ashlee was the oldest, she always got to choose which character or band member she wanted to be before Haley and I. She was always Kimberly, the pink power ranger which was also the pterodactyl. I was Aisha the yellow ranger AKA the Sabre-toothed tiger and since there was only two girls, by default, Haley had to choose from the boys. I am not even sure she was given a choice but she ended up being the blue ranger, billy who was the triceratops. When it came to the Spice Girls Ashlee was always “Posh Spice” and she always had the first dibs on which boy band member was her “boyfriend”. That was the rules of birth order and you had to respect the rules. Speaking of birth order, I am the middle child and I need brownie points so it’s time to tattle tell. Sorry Haley....Mom, you remember that time you thought Haley skipped school with Cody so you flew to his house to try and catch her but she wasn’t there? Well, that’s because Ashlee let her borrow her car and when she found out you were coming to check, Haley jumped in the car and flew back to school. Haley and Cody drove right pass you on the way back and Ashlee covered for them. Don’t worry, Haley and Cody the statute of limitations expired 13 years ago. In order to preserve my status as the “good kid” I will not be telling any of the stories about the times Ashlee covered for me. She really just wanted us to have a good time and if she had to take the heat for it later she would. Growing up, we always had each other’s backs and you didn’t mess with one Lewis girl because there was always another one not very far behind. When I found out my sister passed away my first initial feeling was shock. That feeling didn’t last long because it was instantly replaced with rage. It consumed me, gripped me, and pulsed through my veins. I have never in my life felt a feeling of anger so intense. I will admit it, for the first time I questioned God. I questioned him because my sister was finally going to overcome her vices that controlled her life for so long. It’s no secret that Ashlee struggled. Everyone in this room right now knows that. My sister and I were hard on Ashlee and held her accountable because that’s what she needed and because we love her. One of the biggest reasons I questioned God was because she was finally sober and on her way to a new life and he took her away from us. Why did she fight so hard to achieve what she did if you were just going to take her away? The night she passed away I was deep in my thoughts on that. I stayed at my moms house alone because I just needed that time to think. I was scrolling through Ashlee’s Facebook timeline and noticed two post she shared that really stood out to me. The first one said “GOD says, I know you are tired, but I need you to stay focused. I will give you rest; I will give you victory. I love you.” The second one said “You are about to overcome something you have been dealing with. Your mind and heart will soon be at peace again. You are going to start feeling lighter. Things are about to be clear. Breathe through it. Be patient about it. Trust that you will make it. Everything will be okay. I tell you that because a short time later I went into her room and found an affirmations book she had been journaling in. Ashlee loved to journal her thoughts and about Jesus and life in general. I opened the book to a random page and the first thing I read was “Today I affirm that...and in the blank she wrote “I WILL MAKE IT!” Today I affirm I will make it. As soon as I saw that I instantly stopped questioning God. God didn’t take her away from us. He rewarded her for fighting so hard. He gave her victory. He gave her rest. He gave her peace and the ultimate prize of eternal life in heaven. While I selfishly want her here with me I find solace in knowing my dad welcomed her at the gates of heaven. She has a brand new body and she is holding her twins, Hayden and Dalton again. Most of y’all are familiar with what my dad use to tell me. He’d say “Just slow down, Sam.” I didn’t......at least not right away. I began to apply that in all aspects of my life and really started noticing things I didn’t notice before and started appreciating things more. Then, I felt like Ashlee sent me a sign when I saw the affirmation book and her post. TODAY I AFFIRM THAT I WILL MAKE IT and somehow those two go together so perfectly. JUST SLOW DOWN......TODAY I WILL MAKE IT. You made it Ashlee, you said you would and you did. I wish I could tell you face to face how proud of you I am that you fought so hard, but I know you can hear me. With that being said I LOVE YOU.”
