Jorge Amaro Ruivo Evangelista: A Life of Integrity, Dedication, and Love

Born on October 31, 1961, Jorge Amaro Ruivo Evangelista entered the world in a small, humble home in Mondim Gandra, Valencia do Minho, Portugal. It was an auspicious beginning for a man who would come to embody hard work, family dedication, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. His parents, Jorge Evangelista and Palmira Pereira Ruivo, were not wealthy by conventional standards, but they were rich in values and a fierce work ethic, which they passed down to Jorge and his younger sister, Maria Alice Ruivo Evangelista. Jorge’s early life would be a tapestry woven from experiences that shaped his character, instilling within him a resilience that he carried throughout his life.

Shortly after his birth, in 1962, the Evangelista family migrated to Clermont-Ferrand, France, seeking better opportunities. There, Jorge’s father worked as a steamroller operator, while his mother became an entrepreneur, selling vegetables she picked herself in the local markets. In 1963 Jorge little sister was born ( Maria Alice ) .Though life in France was not easy, Jorge’s parents instilled in him the importance of hard work and perseverance from a young age. It was in France that Jorge began his schooling, attending kindergarten in a foreign land with the determination and adaptability that would come to define him.

At the age of six, Jorge returned to Portugal, with his parents who wanted their children to have a traditional Portuguese education and upbringing. Jorge attended primary school in his hometown of Gandra, where he also served as an altar boy in the local church, deepening his connection to his faith and community. While his parents worked abroad in France, Jorge and Maria Alice were left in the care of their grandparents, a time that fostered his sense of responsibility and independence. His mother returnedto portugal a year later once their new home build was completed while their father would return home periodically, bringing with him gifts that lit up the lives of the children. Among these gifts were expensive school supplies, a coveted remote-control car, and Jorge’s first bicycle—treasures that symbolized their love, even if it wasn’t always expressed through words or physical affection.

Jorge’s childhood was not just about school and church, though. There were moments of youthful rebellion and joy, such as when Jorge and his sister would take their mother’s mobylette (a motorized bike) without permission and tour around town. These adventures, filled with freedom and mischief, were a stark contrast to the strict work ethic instilled in him by his parents, but they provided balance and excitement in his formative years.

As Jorge grew older, he entered middle school in Valencia and later high school in Monção, where his natural intelligence shone through. He pursued a rigorous academic path, studying science and accounting at college in Viana do Castelo. But life had other plans for Jorge. He dreamed of becoming a pilot, a career that called to him with the promise of adventure.

Jorge’s early work experiences further shaped his character. During school breaks, he took jobs in nearby Spain, working as a waiter—a job that required patience, communication, and a strong work ethic. After finishing school, he found employment at a linen factory, where he worked on the production line. Though the factory promised him promotions and opportunities in the office, those promises were never fulfilled. Faced with disappointment, Jorge made the brave decision to leave Portugal in search of a better life, much like his parents had done years earlier.

In 1987, Jorge, along with a group of friends, immigrated to Canada, landing in Toronto with hope in their hearts. His early days in Toronto were marked by physical labor—working in landscaping, building basements, and laying sidewalks. It was tough, grueling work, but Jorge adapted to the required hard labor. His determination to build a better life propelled him forward. Soon, he found a niche in sewer construction, working with companies like TACC and LanCorp. Jorge's natural aptitude for mathematics and problem-solving allowed him to excel in this field. His colleagues and supervisors soon recognized his skill, precision, and efficiency, earning him the nickname "Sewer God."

Jorge’s rise in his profession was no accident. He approached his work with meticulous attention to detail, never cutting corners and always adhering to the highest standards of safety and quality. Over his 29-year career, Jorge and his crew never had to redo a job, nor did they experience any major incidents—a remarkable feat in the construction industry. Jorge earned recognition from his employers for these milestones, but he remained humble, attributing his success to the values instilled in him by his parents.

One of Jorge’s most significant mentors was Jose Melo, a childhood friend who had immigrated to Canada before him. Jose not only guided Jorge through the challenges of settling in a new country but also stood by his side as his best man at his wedding. Their bond was unshakeable, and Jorge always credited Jose for being a father figure in his life.

Yet, for Jorge, success was never measured solely by career achievements. His greatest pride and joy came from his family. On February 7, 1988, Jorge met Zilda at Sicilia Cafe on a blind date, and it was love at first sight. They married later that same year, on July 25, 1988, and began a life together filled with love, commitment, and mutual respect. Together, they raised a family, and Jorge’s dedication to his children and grandchildren was unwavering. His biggest accomplishments were not the milestones he achieved in his career but the moments spent teaching his children and grandchildren the values of hard work, integrity, and love. Whether he was fixing cars in the garage with his son or building things together with his daughter, Jorge imparted life lessons with patience and care.

Outside of work and family, Jorge had a deep love for life. He was passionate about riding his motorcycle with his brothers. He lived to ride. He loved history, often regaling friends and family with stories of past events and explaining the significance of locations he had visited. Jorge’s love of conversation and debate was well known. He believed in the power of dialogue and the importance of understanding people through their words and actions, not their appearances. His belief that a person should always be judged by the content of their character, rather than their outward appearance, was a core part of who he was.

Jorge’s compassion extended beyond his immediate family. He had a soft spot for those in need, be they people or animals. From helping elderly friends with translations to taking them to appointments, Jorge was always willing to lend a hand. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always on the lookout for ways to assist those less fortunate.

As a man who valued balance, Jorge was also a firm believer in taking time off. He protected his personal time, ensuring that unscheduled workdays did not interfere with his moments of rest and relaxation. This time was spent riding his motorcycle, hunting with friends and indulging in his favorite hobbies. His love for Westerns and comedy books, particularly Lupin, provided an escape and a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

One of the pivotal moments in Jorge’s life came when he became a grandfather. The love and joy he felt in watching his grandchildren grow brought a new dimension to his life. Family had always been at the core of Jorge’s identity, and becoming a grandfather only deepened that connection.

Throughout his life, Jorge lived by his core beliefs: “It’s all about family” and “You have to work hard to play hard.” He was never impulsive, always carefully weighing the pros and cons of every decision he made. His meticulous nature and attention to detail were hallmarks of his personality, and his life was a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and love.

Jorge Amaro Evangelista leaves behind a legacy of compassion, integrity, and family. His life was a reflection of the values he held dear, and his story will continue to inspire those who knew him. As he often said, "Be a man"—a simple yet powerful mantra that guided him through every challenge, every success, and every moment in between. Jorge’s life was full, rich with love, laughter, and a deep sense of purpose, and he will be remembered as a man who lived life on his terms, always with his family at the center.
