Sandra Darlena Hicks was a caring mother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed her courage in facing life’s challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Sandra came out a hero and stayed strong until the end. She peacefully entered into eternal life on January 28, 2022 at age 60.

Sandra was born the second youngest of five children to the late Walter H. Hicks and Sarah Bettye Jane Eaton Hicks on January 3, 1962, in Henderson, North Carolina. She was preceded in eternal rest by her eldest brothers, Walter H. Hicks, Jr. and Reginald D. Hicks, and sister, Shelia Marrow. Reared in a Christian home, she was baptized as a young child; she was a member of Mt. Moriah AME Zion church in Henderson, NC and New Bridge Baptist in Richmond, VA.

After moving to Virginia at a young age, Sandra attended Richmond Public Schools graduating from Maggie Walker High School in 1980. She completed her bachelor’s degree in education, specializing in Home Economics at Longwood College (now University) in 1984. Directly after graduating from Longwood College, Sandra started her career teaching at Madison County Public Schools. She would later continue her career at Richmond Public Schools where she was an educator for over 30 years. She also mentored several new teachers during her career. Sandra’s pride and joy was serving as an educator - she shared her passion for learning with thousands of children over the years.,

Sandra was a woman that loved life, traveling and spending time with her family. She had many passions: working with children, crafting, helping others, and she was a self-proclaimed foodie. Outside of school hours at Miles Jones Elementary, she remained committed to girls at school as a Girl Scout Leader, until her retirement.

In the community, Sandra always found a way to make a difference in the lives of others. One of her passions was working with Panera Bread and non-profit organizations to donate leftover bread to various homeless shelters. Family and friends often assisted her in delivering the bread. She also was an active member of the American Legion.

Sandra leaves to cherish her memory: three children: Bryant Hicks, Brittney Walker-Lee (Kory), and Bradley Simmons; one brother, Kenneth Hicks (Belinda), two sisters, Karen Hicks and Patrice “Shelly” Roane; life-long best friend: Lisa Jones; Godchildren Brandon and Brandi “Sissy” Jones and a host of other relatives and friends.

Sandra left her mark on everyone that she touched and there are no words to describe how much she will be missed
