In Loving Memory of Richard Mikel Walton. He embraced the Lord while here on earth and is now walking along side him.
Richard was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, caring son and brother, uncle and friend to many. He peacefully passed on Monday, March 4, 2024 after a tough battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He transitioned to his eternal rest in the comforting embrace of his family at his Whittier home, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and profound impact.
Born on May 31, 1961 in Bellflower, Richard was the oldest of 4 to Mikel and MaryKay Walton. In 1967, at the age of 6, he moved with his Parents and his two younger brothers, David (3) and Douglas (2), to Slidell Louisiana, where in 1968 his sister Ronda was born. Rich had a good sense of direction and was able to help his mom when driving in the town of Slidell. In that time, Rich and the Walton Family built longtime friendships with the Louisiana Group (The Wangrud, Nilsen, Plaisance, Lara and the Dicke Family). In 1971 the Walton Family came back to California and settled in Lakewood where Richard went to Stephen Foster Elementary and Roosevelt Middle School. In his younger years, he played pop warner football, little league baseball, and was active with St. Timothy Lutheran Church. In High school he played football, wrestled, enjoyed surfing, music, and made lifelong friends.
As proud graduate of Mayfair High School, Class of '79, Richard embarked on a rewarding career path. Over the span of 25 years, he navigated corporate sales, leaving a mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him. From his humble beginnings at Paramount / Bayless Stationers to his tenure at Corporate Express, Richard's journey was one marked by excellence, integrity, and genuine care. It was during his career that started in 2004 as a principal Insurance agent at Mikel's Insurance, where Richard truly shone, cultivating lasting relationships with over 600+ dentists while mastering the delicate balance between connection and sales. His tireless dedication and exemplary work ethic committed to his family’s business were recognized through numerous awards and accolades, a testament to his commitment to his craft and the individuals he served. Taking care of his loved ones through the family business was his number one priority!
In 1983, Richard met Patricia at Paramount Stationers and married. They raised 3 children, Rebecca (39), Jonathan (34) and Timothy (31). Rebecca is married to Steven Pancake and they have 3 children named Delaney (13), Kinsley (11) and Jaxon (10). Jonathan has a successful career in marketing and is married to his childhood sweetheart, Tara. They welcomed twins Leon and Melodie in 2022. Timothy continues his passion in writing music and also has a thriving career in marketing.
While Richard raised his children, he always put them as first priority. Attended all their games and school events, treated their friends like his own, supported them in all they did and gave them the security of always having their father to rely and fall back on. Richard’s love for his children and grandchildren was unmatched and he truly was the “proud father and grandfather.”
In 2015 with the help of family matchmakers (Joe, Britney and Rose Rubio) he was introduced to Bery and quickly fell in love. They were married in 2021 and he joyfully welcomed Bery’s children, Jessalyn and Freddy, like his own and took pride in their accomplishments. Freddy (29) does Test Automation Engineer and Jessalyn (27) is currently a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves.  Richard and Bery enjoyed relishing in getaways, going to concerts together, having deep conversations dining out, “Wine Fridays” with the occasional whiskey at home while watching movies. What mattered most to them was togetherness. Despite the distance when dating, he always made the effort to pick her up because he cherished their time together. With Bery by his side they attended almost all the grandchildren’s performances, games, races and school events.
Richard's faith as a Christian served as a guiding light throughout his life, instilling within him a sense of purpose, compassion, and hope. He dedicated his time to serving on the board at Christ Community Church as well as leading children’s ministry classes for his sons.
Beyond work, Richard's life was enriched by his diverse array of interests and passions. An avid sports enthusiast, he found joy in attending Rams football games with his wife, Bery, and moments spent exploring breweries, wineries and engaging in spirited games of racquetball when offered the chance. However, Richard's greatest source of happiness lay in the company of his family, whom he treasured above all else. As a devoted husband, father, son, brother and stepfather, Richard's love knew no bounds, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In closing, the Walton family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who offered support, guidance, and prayers throughout Richard's journey. Your acts of kindness and compassion provided immeasurable comfort and strength, granting the Walton family precious moments together in Richard's final months. Your love and support were a testament to the impact Richard had on all who knew him, and for that, the Walton family will be forever grateful.
