Loretta Schulthies Cummings,
On Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023, sadly Loretta died of cancer. She was the daughter of Susan and Louis Schulthies who had ten children. She is survived by her current husband Ion "Dee" Deaton, Eight children, Twenty-one grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her late husband Joseph Cummings, a son in law Will Buttner and a granddaughter Melissa.
Loretta grew up on a farm in Latrobe Pa. She was the youngest child of the family. Loretta grew up raising chickens with her family. She used to joke that she had to get up early to get the chickens ready to sell before she went to school. Loretta went to Latrobe High School and remained friends with many in her hometown for the rest of her life. Loretta grew up in a small town but met the love of her life, Joe, a city boy, got married and moved to DC where she and Joe had eight children. (can you tell that they were Irish Catholic) after having two children and outgrowing their small home, Loretta and Joe moved to the suburbs of DC and settled into a home in Brentwood Md. where they would add six more kids to the family, for a final total of eight. Loretta and Joe always kept the family moving and we went on many trips to Hershey Park, Chesapeake Beach, and back home to Latrobe to visit and stay with her sister Kitty who also had a houseful of 10 kids. on a side note, to go to Dutch Wonderland mom and Aunt Kitty would shove all of kids into one car as back then you paid by the car not individually. so, we had 20 or so people in one car. Let's just say it kept us all very close. Mom kept us laughing and made sure we knew we were loved. She never forgot a birthday ( even as the family grew larger and larger) and she loved making handmade cards for everyone with her own personal touches. Sadly, Joe (our dad) passed away from cancer at 51 and mom didn't skip a beat on raising us and making sure that we all stayed on the right path. We never once doubted that she wouldn't be there for us when we needed it. She was always a soft shoulder to fall on even if she was having a bad day herself. She single handedly kept our family together and always moving in the right direction. As we all started to get older and move out and start our own lives mom found a good friend to be with and eventually fell in love with him. Mom and Dee (Ion) were so happy together and it warmed all of our hearts to see her like this. They Married and moved into an apartment in Silver Spring together where they lived until she passed. Mom was diagnosed with kidney cancer in September and passed in October. Mom kept us laughing all the way to the end and there is a piece of her in everyone who ever knew her. She was the most kind, caring, funny, awesome person that you would ever meet. You could see her smile from a mile away. She kept up with everyone and always checked on others even if she was not doing well. She was very active in her Church and never missed a Sunday mass (even if it meant watching it on TV). She would give her shirt off of her back if you needed it. After she passed, we found a paper where she gave to over 100 charities every year, if someone needed her help, she was there for them. Mom you will be missed more than you ever know. I know you are up in heaven smiling down on us and we will all keep your memory alive and there won't be a day that you don't cross our minds. We all love you so so much!!!
