On June 16, 2021, our lives were graced with double the joy as Hayden Arthur Fell entered the world, just one minute before his twin brother and best friend, Cameron Joseph. These two were inseparable, always by each other's side, sharing every moment - laughter, dances, and everything in between.

Hayden, even at his young age, embodied pure happiness and compassion. He filled our home with laughter and an infectious smile. At the same time, he displayed a level of emotional intelligence exceeding his age. He had an intuitive sense, recognizing when you weren't feeling well or having a tough day, and he knew just the right moment to offer comforting snuggles.

Hays also loved music and dancing from the time he could stand. If you asked him to give a “wiggle-wiggle” or “shake a leg” he would happily show off his best dance moves, grinning ear to ear, absolutely pleased with himself and his showmanship. He brought immeasurable joy and love to our lives and home every single day.

Ten days before his first birthday, Hayden experienced his first febrile seizure. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning, as he went on to endure a total of five, with the last one occurring while he peacefully slept - the one from which his body was unable to recover. Despite facing this challenge, our little guy was under the care of an excellent pediatrician at Johns Hopkins, as well as an amazing pediatric neurologist at Kennedy Krieger. We sought this expertise, just to err on the side of caution, even though the consensus was that these seizures weren't considered a significant concern, that he would be perfectly fine, and grow out of them with time. Beyond these febrile episodes, Hayden was in perfect health, always on the move, spreading smiles and positive energy wherever he went.

The night he left us, Hayden was in his element, singing "The Wheels on the Bus" with the whole family before bed. He was fine. He was happy. Our world forever changed that night when he passed in his sleep immediately following a seizure that we weren't even aware he was having. We found him in his bed, already gone, the next morning.

In our quest to comprehend the incomprehensible, and given the medical consensus that healthy children don't succumb to febrile seizures – a viewpoint supported by every doctor and specialist we consulted until that fateful day – we felt an urgent need to unravel the mystery of Hayden's passing. Our motivation extended beyond seeking closure for ourselves and our child; we harbored a deep-seated desire to contribute to the prevention of other families enduring the heart-wrenching nightmare that became our reality.

Our journey quickly led us to the Sudden Unexplained or Unexpected Death in Childhood (SUDC) foundation and their involvement with a research study at NYC Langone. Driven by a determination to uncover the underlying causes behind these tragedies, we committed ourselves wholeheartedly to understanding why children like Hayden are inexplicably taken from us. Within one week of Hayden's passing, he was enrolled in the research study, with our genuine hope that he can help them and teach them something. The loss of our precious child was too significant for us not to channel that pain into making a positive impact in his honor.

A comprehensive examination of Hayden's case, along with similar ones, has been featured in the Journal of Neurology. If you'd like to know more about Hayden and this study, you can watch a piece on it put out of the AP - https://apnews.com/video/neurological-disorders-children-maryland-medical-research-new-york-city-ea5b665a65c84941b64d51f440d401f3

Though Hayden's time with us was brief, his impact was profound. Every dance move, each infectious giggle, every smile and wave he gave to a stranger, and the love he showed us are forever etched in our hearts. Though he may not be with us in the physical sense, his spirit lingers, leaving an enduring legacy of joy, laughter, and love. We miss him every minute of every day, but we pay homage to him, weaving his presence into everything we do, and each new memory we create as a family.
