Her Favorite Granddaughter

I was very close to my grandmother, she taught me a lot about life, especially when it came to the kitchen. From making homemade spaghetti to baking just about everything. And sorry in advance, but she made me pinky promise I’d never share her recipes, so let’s just all pray that I was paying enough attention to perfect them. She was the queen of our holiday gatherings, and her kitchen was truly the heart of our celebrations. No one could cook up a feast quite like her, and the best part I think we could all agree on, was her delicious pies and cookies. Each bite was a taste of pure love and tradition, making holidays unforgettable. But if there was one delicacy that held a special place in my heart, it was her chocolate-covered strawberries. The way she meticulously dipped each strawberry into that rich, velvety chocolate and some how not make a mess when drizzling the white chocolate on to them, it was a work of art. Her kitchen was a place of comfort and nourishment. She taught me not just how to cook, but also the importance of sharing meals with those we love. She was also the best storyteller. She would go into detail about whatever she was telling you. You could almost mentally picture what she was talking about because of that attention to detail she had. Her stories were not just narratives; they were life lessons that she used to impart wisdom to her children and grandchildren. My grandma had the sweetest soul, she would send me cute animal reels from Facebook. One day she said to me “I like sending feel good reels… makes you smile” without hesitation I replied with seeing you message me makes me smile before I even see the video”. Just seeing her name pop up on my phone would make my day. I can’t even begin to thank you for everything you’ve taught me. You’ve shown me so much love and shaped me into who I am today. Spending time with you meant the world to me. I am so lucky that I was your favorite granddaughter. I used to ask her, mawmaw since I’m your only granddaughter that means I’m your favorite right? She quickly replied no Ashton is. So that has been a joke that we laughed at quite often. Thank you for whispering sweet words of encouragement in my ear. Thank you so much for being the one person I could always go to no matter what. Thank you for giving up your time and sleep for me . You have no clue how thankful I am for you! Your the one who taught me responsibilities.. You gave the best hugs. And always knew just what to say to make things better. I could always count on you to be there for me, even in the worst of times.Your voice and contagious laughter will never be forgotten. My grandmother in her last days despite being sick she still had found ways to be the uplifting, loving person she was. One of her first words after her stroke was when I brought my dogs Luna and Louie to see her. A room filled with doctors and interns questioning her capabilities, and my grandfather who had not heard her voice since her stroke. My grandmother gave me a hug and saw louie behind me, with the little strength she had she said “Looouieee”. everyone in the room was in shock, everyone looking around at each other Not only did she remember his name but she said it out loud. Now everytime I look at my dog that is what I hear. I will really never be able to forget her voice. As we gather here today to celebrate Donnas life, let us remember the lessons she taught us: the importance of family, the value of hard work, and the beauty of storytelling. Let us carry her legacy forward by embodying these principles in our own lives.
