Life story

Barry Lever was born in Harrisburg PA to parents, Samuel Lever and Doris Harris. He was raised in Harrisburg, and worked in his father's grocery store until he went to University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his undergraduate and Dental degrees. In his first semester of college, his father passed away unexpectedly at the age of 40. Barry finished dental school and joined the Navy, where he continued his studies to become a periodontist- a dental specialist in the treatment of gum disease. After the Navy, he attended University of Pennsylvania and Boston University to complete his specialty degree, becoming the first trained periodontist in Maryland when he opened his office on Reisterstown Road in Pikesville.

Growing up in Harrisburg and throughout his life, he had a sweetheart, Sandee Levin, whom he knew since kindergarten and was blessed to marry and share his life with for 62 years. After living in several places, Sandee and Barry moved to a new Baltimore neighborhood, Willow Glen, where they began their family. First child, Scott, was born in 1958, followed by sister Beth in 1960, and brother Jon, in 1969.

Besides being known for his contributions to his community through his career, his synogogue and myriad of Jewish agencies, and his dedication to his pet project of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Exodus ship, he was known to those who loved him as a caring, committed, creative, educated, learned, and always interesting, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was eager to talk to friends and strangers, because he believed he could learn something from everyone, and he loved teaching what he already knew to people of all ages and from all walks of life. He will be forever missed for his boundless love, his knowledge, his habits, his thumbs up as he tooled around on his scooter, and the little things that made him the one and only Barry.
