A memory of Alicja

Nothing good lasts forever. Like a hommade cheese cake at a family function. Or a box of cookies made from scratch. "Don't forget to need the dough" ! If you needed a cake, cookie or Cabbage roll, babcia was there. Walking through the door with so much hommade food no man, woman or child within property lines would go hungry. My grandmother was born in stevev-gesh-on Poland December 24th 1943, the middle of world war2, Christmas eve. "My mother ran to the woods to hide, with me wrapped in a blanket as bombs fell from the sky" she once told me. I was in aww. I was so proud of my grandmother. so proud of her skills of cooking and gardening amongst almost everything else. She was a family oriented woman. Showing up unannounced, i loved that about her. something always in a grocery bag for ya. She was loving and kind, but she was also tough. I remember her chasing a boyfriend off in highschool with a baseball batt because she didn't like him. 🤣 she was very protective of her family. Every summer shed pick up Every grandchild she could and drive to muskoka, the "cottage" we all called it. how she handled us for weeks without insanity amazed me. "I wanted to give you kids the experience of the wild" she told me once, asking her why and how she did it. She was so many good things mixed together. "Like a soup" she would say. But most of all she was my babcia. Actually she wasn't just mine. She was so manys babcia. Everyone knew her as " Babcia". That's how special she was. But nothing good lasts forever, you have to hold onto that sliver of good while it lasts, learn from them, apprichate the moments as your in them. Yesh a co hom babcia. Yesh a co hom so much.
