Life story

Carl R. Hough, 91, passed away in Jacksonville, FL, Tuesday, January 9, 2018, after a lengthy battle with Parkinsons Dementia. He was born in Booker, FL, to the late Carl Shawkey Hough and Lou Bedia Padgett. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Hough, the love of his life, whom he married on April 26, 1949, in Moniac Georgia. Their 68 beautiful years together have been an example of love and devotion for his family to emulate. Carl is survived by his three sisters, Frances Pietila, Jackie Loos (Dennis) and Bonnie Woods (Eddie). He is also survived by daughters, Diane Landschoot (Mark) and Peggy Sprunt (Scott). He leaves behind four cherished grandchildren, Matt Landschoot, David Landschoot (Anna), Jenny Peeples (Adam) and Alex Sprunt, and two great-grandchildren, Eli and Grace Landschoot. Carl Hough loved his country and was a Combat Veteran of WWII (1944-1947). During his enlistment, he was a ship-fitter and an underwater welder. His ship was anchored near the U.S.S Missouri in Tokyo Bay witnessing the signing of the Surrender. After his service with the USN, Carl worked for Laurie Yonge Flying Service at Imeson Airfield and earned his private pilots license. He devoted 43 years of combined service to the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department working his way from firefighter to lieutenant. In 1975, Mayor Hans Tanzler presented Carl with the Lifesaving Award for saving a two-year-old child from a burning mobile home. In 1976 he became the fire chief of the Jacksonville Port Authority Fire Department and retired from public service in 1992. When he wasnt working, he was always keeping busy, whether playing horseshoes, visiting friends, spending time with family and worshiping at Murray Hill Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder Emeritus. The visitation will be held at Jacksonville Memory Gardens on Monday, January 15th at 1 pm followed by the Service at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Community Hospice. The family would also like to express their heartfelt thanks to the 2 North staff at St. Catherines Labour Manor and Community Hospice for the love, care, and compassion they extended to Carl and the entire family during his lengthy illness.
