Life story

Jason was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and spent part of his youth in North Carolina, where he graduated from Southern Alamance High School in 1993. Throughout his childhood and teen years, one constant remained: the unwavering bond he shared with his mother, who was his childhood best friend.

After returning to Kentucky, Jason found a new circle of close-knit friends—most of them Mustang enthusiasts who shared his passion for speed and sleek design. Whether it was a night in the garage, a day at the racetrack, or meticulously detailing a car for the next outing, Jason's love for Mustangs was unmatched. His excitement for cars wasn’t just a hobby—it was a lifestyle.

Jason worked several jobs before settling into a long-standing role at Papercone Corporation, where he dedicated over 20 years of service making envelopes and forging lifelong friendships along the way.

Everything changed on July 4, 2014, when Jason went on a first date with the love of his life, Sara. It was the beginning of a beautiful chapter. They were married on September 19, 2015, and spent every moment together embracing life fully and joyfully. Jason embraced his role as “Uncle Jay” with pride, adoring his nieces and nephew, always ready to spoil them with love. Together, he and Sara built their life and home in Mount Washington, Kentucky.

In 2017, Jason sought a change—a career that would allow more quality time with his wife. That decision led him to Bullitt County Public Schools, where he began driving a school bus in 2018. In 2023, his hard work and dedication earned him a promotion to driver trainer—a role he cherished.

But Jason didn't love his job for the schedule or the paycheck. He loved it because of his "bus babies." Each morning, he showed up with purpose: to make a positive difference in a child’s life. Bus #1409 wasn’t just a vehicle to him—it was a community. He knew every student, and every student knew and loved him.

At Jason’s memorial service, one of his students, Nate Brown, shared words that captured the essence of who Jason was:

"Most of y’all know that Jason was a good man, but beyond that, he was a good friend.

...Congratulations, you're now on Jason's bus.

It was more than a ride to and from school because of Jason—1409 was a community.

...Jason was a man that comes once in a lifetime, and I thank God for blessing me with meeting him."

Jason’s impact on his community, coworkers, friends, and especially his students was profound. His heart, compassion, and joyful spirit touched lives in ways that will never be forgotten.

On the morning of September 8, 2023, Jason was tragically killed in a car accident on his way to work. A beautiful life, taken far too soon by a careless act—but while that day marked the end of his earthly story, Jason’s legacy continues to live on in the countless lives he touched.

Jason was, and always will be, deeply loved by his family, friends, colleagues, and the children he drove and cared for every day. Thank you for taking a moment to read a small piece of Jason’s story.

And as we continue on in our own journeys, may we all remember to "Love Like Jason."

How are you connected to Jason?
Sara Benningfield 67w

It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later…

Where do I even begin? You were the love of my life for ten beautiful, unforgettable years. You taught me things no one else could have, lessons only you were meant to show me. Your wisdom, your heart, your unwavering love for me were undeniable, seen and felt by everyone who knew us. These past almost two years have taught me even more. You were right, not everyone is your friend or your family. Vulnerability is often exploited. Time is fleeting. But through all the pain, I’ve also learned that there are still good people in this world. And I’ve learned that love, true love, doesn’t end. My love for you, Jason, has never ended. It never will. To say I’ve moved on would be wrong. I’ve simply found a new normal. I’ve rediscovered pieces of myself that I thought were lost forever. And I’ve found someone who not only loves me, but also honors you to the very best of his ability. That doesn’t erase you. That doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten. It means I carry you with me into the new chapters, always. I still long to tell your story, stories about you, memories that make me laugh, moments that bring tears, the way you loved, the way you lived. For a long time, even hearing your name felt like too much. But now, I can say it again with warmth in my heart. Because you deserve to be remembered, Jason. Fully, loudly, beautifully. Walking through your criminal case was one of the most painful journeys I’ve ever faced. Justice? No. It didn’t bring you back. It didn’t bring back your big smile, your big heart, your endless love. It just left a deeper ache. At one point, I didn’t want to go on without you. I didn’t recognize myself anymore. The Sara Benningfield I was with you felt lost. You helped shape me. Because of you, I became that version of me. And when you left, that part of me went with you. I felt hollow, like a shell of who I used to be. But then little signs. A cardinal on the porch. A rainbow after a storm. The chance to tell your story. That’s when I knew you were still here in your own way. Watching. Guiding. Loving. You sent me my rainbow after the storm, Jason. And I thank you for that with every piece of my heart. I miss you more than words could ever capture. But I wouldn’t want you to come back to this earth, not with all the pain and brokenness, because I know Heaven is your home now. You’re whole. You’re safe. You’re free. One day, I’ll see you again. Until then, thank you for watching over us. For being my forever love. I love you, Jason. I always have, and I always will. I love you, handsome 💔
