I Was Blessed to Know My Grandfather by Karen Ingram - A Story from Facebook
Should not say but...I had a favorite. My mom's Dad, Grandpa Louie. He would rotate living between his three daughters each year. We had grandpa for the summer months in Ohio. I was about 7 years old when this story takes place. The winter before there was an ice storm that destroyed the hedges just under the overhang of the front of the house. Spring came and they were all removed, leaving empty a beautiful deep plot of land the length of the front of the house. My parents were not going to replant until late summer. Grandpa came to stay with us. He was a man of VERY few words. This particular morning, I was outside playing with my dishes and I had some beans that had been soaking in water to the point of being all wrinkled. Grandpa always sat in the garage smoking his pipe, in a lawn chair with a spare next to him, looking out onto the neighborhood watching the world go by. I found myself plopping down into the spare chair holding the beans saying nothing and enjoying the smell of his pipe, content to just enjoy our quiet time and to be with him, because he did not like frivolous talk. As I held the beans, very content, He looks over at me and says... "You know if you plant those you will get green beans". Fresh green beans were my all time favorite vegetable. He spent the rest of the afternoon showing and helping me plant the beans. Unbeknownst to my parents, he showed me how to care for them and soon the plants began to grow. He spent the whole summer working with me and growing the bean plants. When the plants were about eight inches tall my mother notices something growing in the front bed. It came out. She threw a fit, concerned what the neighbors would think because we were growing green beans in the front yard. She wanted them gone. I cried and cried and grandpa saved my plants. They were beautiful three foot tall plants. We got the first harvest off of them and I was hooked. A second harvest came and I wanted to keep them. I lost my plants to the new bushes. It killed a little bit of me to have to pull my plants up. But I will forever have that precious favorite memory and a summer well spent with my Grandpa Louie.
