Robert James Russell Jr.
Thank you for your service
Robert served in the armed forces. We honor that service here.
Robert James Russell Jr. was born on June 30, 1938 to Robert and Mary (Hlyn) Russell Sr. Known as Bob to his family and friends, he grew up in North Smithfield, RI. In 1956, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served as an FTMSN (Fire Control Technician Seaman) aboard the USS Yosemite (AD-19). After being honorably discharged, he attended the University of Denver and, on his 24th birthday, married his beloved wife, Beverly. They soon started their family, welcoming their first daughter, Robin, in April 1963, followed by Kelly in August 1964 and Mindy in April 1969.
Bob worked as an electrician by trade, enjoying a long and fulfilling career before retiring from CVS Corporate. Standing at 6'4" with his signature handlebar mustache, he was a presence wherever he went and was always remembered by those who met him.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Bob played in several local men's leagues, including the Woonsocket YMCA Basketball team and the Tupperware Men’s Golf League. He was a devoted fan of the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Chicago Cubs, with some of his most cherished memories being the Patriots' Super Bowl win in 2002, the Red Sox's World Series victory in 2004, and the Chicago Cubs' triumph in 2016.
Bob had a true love for food, often helping himself to any leftovers on his family’s plates. Whether enjoying a home-cooked meal or indulging in his annual Father’s Day seafood feast at George’s, he was always in good spirits when food was involved. He stayed busy attending USS Yosemite reunions with Beverly and playing pitch, where the two were an unbeatable team. Known affectionately as "Pop" by his eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons, he took great joy in his role as a grandfather, supporting them by attending their sporting events, treating them to pizza and ice cream, and spending countless hours playing in his pool.
In addition to his family and love of sports, Bob was passionate about his vintage 1959 Triumph TR3, which he loved to drive around. He also had a soft spot for dogs, often bringing home strays while raising his family, and he developed a special fondness for bulldogs throughout his life.
Above all, Bob was kind, understanding, and deeply loving. He was a great listener, always the sounding board whenever there was a disagreement. He had a way of making every holiday feel like home, and his seat at the head of the table will forever feel empty. There are constant reminders of him all around us, and it brings a sense of peace knowing he’s back together with Beverly.
